Karl Newmann, M.D., editor of "Traveling Healthy," newsletter, in a recent World Traveler Magazine article says: "International health coverage under national policies is becoming more and more problematic due to the HMO system. Many of the suits over health coverage issues are due to out-of- the-area coverage."

This is what the U.S. passport currently states in its cover: "Health Insurance: Persons considering foreign travel should determine what health insurance coverage, if any, they have while outside the United States. Medicare does not cover health care costs outside the United States except under limited circumstances in Canada and Mexico."

Medical professionals are unanimous in advising all travelers to take out emergency evacuation coverage and, if possible, to avoid being treated in some overseas hospitals.
